A Day in Shanghai Part II

After visiting People's Square, we walked over to the nearby TV Tower, also known as the Oriental Pearl Tower. The name reminded us of one of the Dharma stations on Lost because we are pretty much obsessed with the show right now. The tower is one of the most notable buildings in the Shanghai skyline. It was completed in 1995 and is the third tallest tower in the world. And just because you really wanted to know its coordinates are 31 degrees 14'30 N and 121 degrees 29'42 E. 

They have a restaurant and observation deck inside but we didn't go up as we had much to see and do in Shanghai. Check out some pictures!

After we finished checking out the Oriental Pearl we had to find a place to go inside and warm up. Did I mention that I really messed up when I packed for the trip? I guess I am used to the nice Hong Kong weather where a jacket is hardly ever needed. I checked the weather report and saw 50 degrees F and thought "oh thats not too cold!" Wrong! With the wind it was really really cold. And I just packed light sweaters. So we went to the mall and bought me a nice warm sweater after we left the Pearl. Daniel had already bought his sweater in the morning at the Yu Yuan gardens. 

By the time we exited the mall, it was getting dark. We decided to wander to the waterfront and check out the views of the Bund on the other side of the Huangpu River. While we were there taking pictures, a couple came up to us and the guy asked if he could take a picture of us with his wife. We said ok and then he left and started chatting with all his friends and showing them the pictures. We have no idea why they wanted a picture. We think maybe because Daniel was the only guy in China with a beard. We also received many many stares every time we rode on the subway. 

After we finished up our time at the Waterfront it was time to cross the river and check out the view from the other side. Also known as the Bund, this area has the best view in Shanghai including the Oriental Pearl and many of the other skyscrapers. We figured it was too cold to swim so we got a ride to the other side. :-)

Lucky for us it got dark on our way over to the Bund. The night views of Shanghai were amazing!

After seeing the Bund, Wendy's mom drove us by a few of the most prominent streets/neighborhoods in Shanghai - famous for the shopping and nightlife. While on the way to these places we passed another famous attraction. A sign pointing at brick building said "Site of the First National Congress of the Communist party of China." This is where the founding of the Communist party was announced in 1921. We didn't get a picture because it was literally just a sign that said that. :-)

After our little driving tour we stopped off for dinner. We'll finish up the third installment of our Shanghai series with dinner in a bamboo boat, our Sunday morning in Shanghai, and riding to the airport at over 400 km/hour. Don't miss it!
